8 is enough for Grammy nominees

December 9, 2005

BY JIM DeROGATIS POP MUSIC CRITIC

Capping the second extraordinary year in a row for Chicago hip-hop, Grammy voters singled out the sophomore album by Kanye West, "Late Registration," for eight nominations, while "Be," the latest from West's mentor Common, received four.

When the 2005 Grammy nods were announced in New York Thursday morning, West did not match the unprecedented 10 nominations he received for last year's debut, "The College Dropout." But he did top the list of multiple honorees along with two artists he produced who both also got eight nods -- R&B singer John Legend (for his debut "Get Lifted") and pop diva Mariah Carey (for her surprising comeback, "The Emancipation of Mimi').

Beyonce, Stevie Wonder and 50 Cent garnered six nominations each; Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Gwen Stefani and U2 each claimed five, and downstate Illinois country star Gretchen Wilson joined Common in taking four.

At the awards ceremony in Los Angeles in February, West and Carey will compete for the top honor of Album of the Year with U2, Stefani and Paul McCartney, as well as going head-to-head for Record of the Year (with "Gold Digger" and "We Belong Together," respectively) against Stefani ("Hollaback Girl"), cartoon hip-hoppers Gorillaz ("Feel Good Inc.") and pop-punks Green Day ("Boulevard of Broken Dreams").

Earlier this week, before the nominations were announced, West was defiantly cocky, despite the fact that some listeners have been turned off by his outspoken attitude, and others were offended by his criticism of President Bush after Hurricane Katrina.

"If I don't win Album of the Year, I'm gonna really have a problem with that," West told MTV. "I don't care if I jumped up and down right now on the couch like Tom Cruise ... You can never take away from the amount of work I put into it, so I don't wanna hear all of that politically correct stuff."

The artist sang a different song Thursday, indicating that he knows he is sometimes his own worst enemy. "I'd like to thank the academy for paying attention to my music, not my mouth," West said.

The full list of West's honors includes Record of the Year, Album of the Year (for his own album and for producing Legend's), Best R&B Song, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Album.

Common's nominations include Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Album. The rapper is currently shooting a movie in California.

In the remaining two of the coveted top four Grammy categories, Carey's "We Belong Together," U2's "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own," Legend's "Ordinary People," Springsteen's "Devils & Dust" and Rascal Flatts' "Bless the Broken Road" are vying for Song of the Year, and Legend is competing for Best New Artist with R&B singer Ciara, Brit-poppers Keane, the country group SugarLand and Chicago pop-punks Fall Out Boy -- who've actually been together for six years and who spent 2005 touring behind their second album, "From Under the Cork Tree."

Dubious of some of his fellow Best New Artist nominees and aware of the curse that's befallen some of the previous prizewinners in that category who've never been heard from again, Fall Out Boy bassist and bandleader Pete Wentz took the nomination in stride. "It's really weird to be lumped into that sandwich," Wentz said during a brief chat from the band's tour bus. "It's kind of really nice bread and crappy meat -- like some awesome sourdough roll with baloney."

Next up for the group: Performing on MTV's New Year's Eve broadcast, then launching a headlining tour and beginning work on a new album early in 2006. "We've already got 15 songs written," Wentz said.

As always, the 10,000 music industry professionals who belong to Grammy sponsors, the Recording Academy, delivered plenty of nominations singling out nostalgic, baby boom-era favorites -- including McCartney, Springsteen, Neil Young and the Rolling Stones -- and other artists whose commercial success far outshone their alleged "artistic excellence," among them 50 Cent, Carey and Stefani.

But in addition to acknowledging the artistic triumphs of West and Common, voters rewarded cutting-edge sounds by artists in several other categories. Among the most impressive: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group (the Black Eyed Peas, the Killers, Los Lonely Boys, Maroon Five and the White Stripes), Best Electronic/Dance Album (the Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Kraftwerk and LCD Soundsystem) and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, the Killers and U2).

The Grammys will be broadcast live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 7 p.m. on Feb. 8 on WBBM-Channel 2.
